Notre Dame football came close to losing head coach Marcus Freeman this offseason to the NFL. But his commitment to the Fighting Irish has reignited things on the College Football Recruiting trail. Which now involves landing a four-star linebacker in front of Indiana and Missouri.
Roman Igwebuike is staying close to home by choosing ND, which he confirmed to Hayes Fawcett of On3/Rivals Saturday. The long 6-foot-3, 220-pound ‘backer hands Freeman and the Fighting Irish a Chicago talent from Mount Carmel High.
“All glory to God!! I will give 110% everyday to bring a natty to my hometown,” Igwebuike told Fawcett after announcing his decision. He also turns down Clemson, as the Atlantic Coast Conference school landed on his final list too.

Freeman presents a past background in linebacker play, starring at the position for Ohio State in college. He later coached linebackers at Kent State and Purdue. So Igwebuike gains a head coach who knows his position well.
Although Notre Dame linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary led the recruiting charge to land the blue chip talent. Jean-Mary finally reels in a long-awaited linebacker commit to the class of 2027.
This moves makes up for one notable recruiting loss too. Notre Dame surprisingly lost four-star quarterback Trey Tagliaferri after committing to the 2028 class early. Tagliaferri since pivoted to SEC power Oklahoma on July 3.
Meanwhile, Igwebuike rises as the 22nd verbal commitment for the Fighting Irish and their 13th different four-star prospect. He’ll join the nation’s No. 2 ranked recruiting class per 247Sports and On3/Rivals.
