The 2026 Notre Dame football season is off to a rousing start after the No. 4-ranked Fighting Irish beat up on Wisconsin, 41-13. Not every college football fan was impressed, though, and pointed to the fact that quarterback CJ Carr and company went into halftime with a small 13-10 lead. After the game, the ND QB pushed back on that narrative, warning fans that not every game is going to be a 60-minute cakewalk.
“Outside of our building, here can be a narrative that college football is easy, and we should steamroll teams,” Carr said, per Adam Rittenberg of ESPN. “The reality is that’s a really good Wisconsin team with some really good players. So, adjusting and staying consistent throughout the game was really helpful for us.”
College football does not have an NFL -style preseason, so the opening game can often be a challenge, even for good teams. Expecting every contending team to blow the doors off their first opponent is completely ridiculous, especially when that team is a legit Big Ten outfit like Wisconsin.

There were plenty of blowouts in Week 1, as top teams like Texas, LSU, Georgia, Indiana, and more all won by large double-digit spreads. However, the Notre Dame football team wasn’t the only highly-ranked squad to struggle. Oregon was down in the 3rd quarter and tied in the 4th quarter before finally beating Boise State, and Michigan needed all 60 minutes (and maybe 60 minutes and one second) to miraculously take down Western Michigan.
Carr is absolutely right here. Notre Dame will be fine, even after playing one half of only decent football to open the season.
