The Notre Dame Fighting Irish took on the Big Ten’s Wisconsin Badgers Sunday night at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin, turning what looked like a competitive game at first into a 41-13 blowout behind a big performance from rising NFL Draft prospect CJ Carr.
Carr, a Saline, Michigan native, racked up 239 yards and two touchdowns through the air for the Fighting Irish as they scored 28 second-half points to pull away from coach Luke Fickell’s Badgers. After the game, Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman was brief but highly complimentary of his starting quarterback, using five superlatives to describe what he witnessed on Sunday night according to Irish beat writer Pete Sampson of The Athletic.
“Excellent. Excellent. Leader, smart, prepared, coach on the field,” Freeman said.

The Fighting Irish outpassed the Badgers 239 yards to 217 yards and outrushed them 111-67 yards, averaging one yard more per play and winning the turnover battle two to zero. The Irish defense also had its moments against the Badgers as cornerback DJ McKinney stunned the Lambeau Field crowd with a game-changing pick-six.
Carr, a four-star prospect out of high school, is knocking on the door of Heisman candidacy, placing his name among more highly-touted players like Jeremiah Smith and Arch Manning early in the 2026 season.
Carr and the Fighting Irish don’t have the same type of marquee schedule as Smith’s Ohio State Buckeyes and Manning’s Texas Longhorns, but they are almost certain to be favored in every game this season with the possible exception of their November 7 at home against Miami (FL), which could provide Freeman’s starting quarterback a chance to cement himself as a Heisman Trophy finalist. Notre Dame is now 1-0 on the season, with a home date against Rice on the schedule for September 12, another possible showcase for a quarterback who appears ready for all challenges ahead.
