Notre Dame football is coming off a massive recruiting weekend. It appears the Fighting Irish are riding that momentum to land a priority quarterback.

Notre Dame football just put together another massive recruiting weekend. Head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish are hoping to utilize that momentum and get some good news on the horizon. That includes the quarterback position for the 2027 class.

Among the most important visitors that were in South Bend this past weekend was 2027 Vero Beach (Fla.) High School signal caller Wonderful “Champ” Monds IV, who is the lone uncommitted quarterback on the 2027 board for the Irish. Heading into the visit, Notre Dame was viewed as a dark horse for the talented Florida passer. It appears that Freeman and Co. are much more than that after it concluded.

With good vibes coming out of the visit, 247 Sports national recruiting analyst Brian Dohn logged a crystal ball prediction on Sunday night for Monds to land with Notre Dame. Tom Loy followed with a prediction, as did Steve Wiltfong from On3/Rivals on Monday morning. To say Notre Dame made a big move this weekend would be a massive understatement.

While there isn’t a firm timeline to make a decision, it appears that Notre Dame is in the driver’s seat to land Monds. If they do, that would continue some tremendous quarterback recruiting over the last several years, including Kenny Minchey, CJ Carr, Blake Hebert, Noah Grubbs, and Teddy Jarrard, consecutively. In the blink of an eye, the quarterback position is as strong as we have seen in a long time.

Monds’ recruiting background

Monds was previously a member of the 2028 recruiting class (where he was ranked as the top quarterback in the class) before reclassifying to 2027 recently.

Despite that jump, Monds is still rated as a four-star player on the 247 Sports Composite ranking. That rating has the Florida native pegged as the No. 259 overall player, the No.19 quarterback, and the No. 25 player from the state of Florida for the 2027 recruiting class. As Monds showcases himself this offseason, he feels like a safe bet to move up those rankings.

A long list of impressive programs has been pursuing Monds. The 6-2, 224-pound signal caller currently holds offers from the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Oregon, Michigan, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Florida, Texas A&M, Miami, Florida State, Auburn, South Carolina, SMU, UNC, Illinois, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma State, Pitt, UCF, Baylor, Wake Forest, Syracuse, Purdue, West Virginia, and Northwestern, among others.

In five games in 2025, Monds flashed as the main backup to 2026 Florida State athlete signee Efrem White. He managed to complete 45 of 63 passes (71 percent) for 691 yards and seven touchdowns. Monds also scored a touchdown on the ground, while also not throwing an interception.

With a very talented Vero Beach team returning next season, you should expect the dynamic signal caller to put together a tremendous year.
