Notre Dame will honor late former football coach Lou Holtz with a helmet decal during the 2026 season.

The decal features "LOU" in white letters against a black background between two hands making an "L" with a thumb and index finger.

Holtz, who led the Irish to a national title in 1988, passed away in March at the age of 89.

Holtz was hired by Notre Dame in 1986 after head coaching jobs with William & Mary, North Carolina State, Arkansas, Minnesota and the NFL's New York Jets.

After going 5-6 and 8-4 in his first two seasons in charge, Holtz guided the Irish to a 12-0 record in 1988 and a victory over West Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl en route to the program's first national title in 11 years. During that run, Notre Dame ended Miami's 36-game regular-season winning streak in the famous "Catholics vs. Convicts" game.

Holtz and the Irish followed up that title with a 12-1 season in 1989 and a win in the Orange Bowl over Colorado. Their only blemish that year came at the hands of the Hurricanes, who went on to finish as champions.

In 11 seasons, Holtz led Notre Dame to a 100-30-2 record, five wins in bowl games and four top-five finishes. He left Notre Dame after the 1996 season and finished his coaching career at South Carolina from 1999 to 2004.
