With the summer months quickly coming to an end, Ryan Day and the Ohio State football team have shifted the majority of its focus on preparing for an upcoming season. While the 2025-26 season included some major victories both morally and on the field, the overall end goal was not achieved.

In preparing for this year’s quickly-approaching season, the Buckeyes will look for more success in the College Football Playoffs. Hopefully, another appearance in the College Football Playoff Championship game.

While focus shifts to this year’s roster of current Buckeyes, recruiting never stops for Ohio State. The Buckeyes 2027 class is all but wrapped up with 19 verbal commitments. Ohio State will likely add to this total before it is all said and done, but also likely not until closer to November when the Buckeyes coaching staff has completed their senior evaluations.

Because of this, Ohio State is mainly looking at the 2028 cycle and the team received a big update Monday when 2028 five-star quarterback Christopher Vargas (Danvers, MA / St. Johns Prep) announced that he will be committing soon on Aug. 8.

We know Vargas will be committing on Aug. 8 but he did not include an official final schools list. Additionally, with him committing prior to taking official visits it is even harder to narrow down his list of true contenders. That being said, if there is one college football program that can feel comfortable being in the running, it is Ohio State.

Vargas visited with Ohio State back in the spring and following the visit, he made it clear Ohio State was one of the schools leading in his recruitment. He spoke with multiple national recruiting websites and said Ohio State was one of his top schools and described his strong relationships with the coaching staff. Vargas then returned this summer for a recruiting camp with the Buckeyes.

Following the multiple visits, Ohio State received predictions via On3.com from National Recruiting Insiders Chad Simmons and Steve Wiltfong early last month. Adding to this, Ohio State received another prediction from National Recruiting Writer Adam Gorney of On3 on Monday.

The only certainty in college football recruiting is that there are no certainties. This holds true especially in today’s world where NIL and the transfer portal have changed recruiting immensely. That being said, where there is smoke there is usually fire and Ohio State is hoping the smoke leads to scarlet and grey fireworks Saturday when he makes his commitment.

Vargas is the No. 1 QB in the 247Sports Composite and he is the No. 6 national recruit. If he chooses Ohio State, he will be joining an already star-studded class that includes four-star wide receiver Jett Harrison, four-star running back Elijah Newman-Hall and four-star edge Jameer Whyce.

Quick Hits

The Ohio State women’s basketball Buckeyes made big recruiting headlines Monday as well. 2027 four-star small forward Mya Wilson (Maplewood, MN / Hill-Murray) announced her commitment to Ohio State on Monday. Wilson is the second member of the Buckeyes’ class joining four-star point guard Myella Chapman.

Wilson is the No. 11 SF in the 247Sports Composite and she is the No. 44 national recruit.
