Ohio State has built their football empire on an unbelievable ability to recruit.
No matter the coach, no matter the era, no matter the state of the Buckeyes program, they have always recruited at the top of the sport. Monday marked the official day that the class of 2028 is available to be recruited.
The 2028 class will be an incredibly important one for Ohio State, as, if things stay the course, that class will have the next quarterback after Tavien St. Clair in it. Certainly, the Buckeyes go after the top quarterbacks in every class, but St. Clair is going to have the leg up on the 2026 and 2027 recruits, who may not last long.
That leaves it for a member of the 2028 class to potentially take the reins after St. Clair heads to the NFL.

Now, a lot can change from now until then, and that prediction is taking into account a lot of assumptions. Regardless, each class of recruits is just as important as the last.
For Ohio State, they have definitely changed their approach when it comes to recruiting. The 2025-26 season proved that investing a lot into the young players doesn't bear the fruit that it once did.
In the traditional College Football landscape, the foundation of a program was built on its recruits. In today's day and age, the foundation of a program is built in the transfer portal, and having a couple of freshman that may play early is simply a luxury.
For Ohio State, we saw Ryan Day and his staff let go of several of their top freshman talent in favor of transfer portal additions. Adding in 21, 22, and 23-year-olds to compete against teenagers is a nearly immeasurable advantage and one that every team is trying to accomplish, and the Buckeyes are no different.
So, how will that approach manifest itself for the 2028 class? It is way too early to make this guess. The landscape in college football is ever-changing, and who knows if the state of recruiting will be the same in two years.
For now, it is this way, and the Buckeyes will again be at the front of the line, just as they always are, to bring the next great Buckeye to Columbus, Ohio.
