Jeremiah Smith arrived in Columbus as a prodigy, and he will likely leave as one of the best wide receivers in college football history. Smashing records at Ohio State, a haven for pass-catchers, will typically earn one a spot among the elite. The 20-year-old officially became the Buckeyes’ all-time leader in receiving yards during Saturday afternoon’s game versus Kent State, per Hayes Fawcett of Rivals and On3.
Michael Jenkins was the previous record-holder at 2,898 yards. There have been many great wideouts who have worn the Scarlet and Gray, but Smith has produced a one-of-a-kind legacy over the last three seasons. He is probably still smarting from last Saturday’s collapse versus Texas, so this amazing achievement could be the pick-me-up he needed.
The unanimous All-American and Ohio State are using Kent State as a convenient punching bag after their rough visit to Austin, jumping out to a 28-0 lead within the first 24 minutes of game time. They cannot dwell on the Longhorns. Perhaps their paths will cross again before season’s end, but a formidable Big Ten slate awaits.

The Buckeyes open conference play versus Illinois next Saturday and will visit Iowa, Indiana and USC in October. Smith will be ready. The 6-foot-4 native of Miami Gardens, Florida has three touchdowns and roughly 400 receiving yards through two and a half games this season. Despite being on the losing end, he shredded a lauded Longhorns defense for 164 yards and a score. He is in lockstep with Julian Sayin, just as he was with Will Howard in 2024.
Regardless of the circumstances, this man is a savant at the wide receiver position. His individual accolades are already entrenched in Ohio State football lore, but a second national championship could cement Jeremiah Smith as a legend of mythological proportions.
