Ohio State football pulls off massive SEC transfer double dip

Ohio State does it again in the transfer portal, landing commitments from two SEC defenders in what appears to be a package deal. Former Alabama Crimson Tide starters James Smith and Qua Russaw have both committed to the Buckeyes. Each entered college as a five-star recruit and both rank among the top players available in the portal this cycle.

Smith is a junior defensive lineman who stands 6’3 and weighs 297 pounds. He recorded 26 total tackles and 2.5 sacks this past season at Alabama and brings proven SEC production to Columbus. According to 247Sports, Smith is ranked as the No. 7 overall player in the 2026 College Football Transfer Portal Top Prospects. He should step in immediately and play a major role along Ohio State’s defensive line in 2026.

Russaw is a sophomore edge rusher listed at 6’2 and 243 pounds. He appeared in seven games for the Crimson Tide, totaling 13 tackles and one sack. While his on-field production is still developing, his upside is undeniable. Russaw is ranked as the No. 58 overall player in the portal by 247Sports and brings the type of athleticism and raw ability that can elevate Ohio State’s pass rush. With Arvell Reese and Caden Curry headed to the NFL, Russaw projects as a clear upgrade with room to grow under Ohio State’s coaching staff.

These additions are a big win for Ryan Day and the Buckeyes. Prior to Smith and Russaw committing, Ohio State’s transfer portal class ranked in the high 40s nationally. With their additions, the Buckeyes now sit firmly inside the top 10 according to 247Sports. The connection between the two newcomers runs deep. Smith and Russaw played high school football together in Montgomery, Alabama, continued their careers together in Tuscaloosa, and now take the next step together in Columbus. As best friends, they arrive with built-in chemistry and a shared goal of keeping Ohio State’s defense elite in 2026.

Smith entered the portal as the No. 1 defensive lineman in this transfer cycle, while Russaw was ranked as the No. 10 edge rusher. There is plenty of potential in this pairing, and it also marks a slight shift in approach for Ohio State. This is the first time this offseason the Buckeyes have leaned into upside and long-term potential in the transfer portal, particularly in Russaw’s case, rather than strictly targeting proven production.
