There is no question about who the best player in college football is right now. Jeremiah Smith is dominating every opponent this season, scoring touchdowns and making incredible catches that leave defenders shook.

The future top draft pick may just be the most coveted player heading into the 2027 NFL Draft, but first, he has one final chance to leave on top of the college football world. After winning the national championship in 2025, Ohio State has a great chance to win their second in three seasons with Smith leading the way.

Quarterback Julian Sayin made it clear before the season started: Sayin wanted to get Smith the ball more — followed by an eventual Heisman Trophy for the talented receiver. So far, he has lived up to that promise.

Smith is first in the nation in receptions with 44, first in receiving yards with 823, tied for first with nine touchdowns, and tied for 18th with an average of 18.7 yards per catch. His season-long total is a 72-yard touchdown two weeks back against Illinois in the blowout win. Against Iowa last Saturday, he finished with 11 catches for 209 yards and two touchdowns.

Head coach Ryan Daysaid it best … “If he’s one-on-one, he’s open. If he’s double covered, he’s kind of open. If he’s triple-covered, he’s covered,” via Spencer Holbrook on X.

Smith is at the top of the Heisman rankings through Week 5 of the season, but despite his insane play, he isn’t a runaway favorite just yet. Miami’s Malachi Toney is playing extremely well also, and deserves to be in the conversation. It will be an amazing race to the finish line, but if Smith continues to just tear defenses apart, and OSU remains a national championship contender, the Heisman will be Smith’s to lose.
