Ohio State is set to honor one of its best coaches in program history this fall.

On Tuesday, the team announced that former head coach Jim Tressel will be inducted into the Ring of Honor at Ohio Stadium during the Buckeyes' season opener against Ball State on Sept. 5. Tressel coached at OSU from 2001-10, winning a national title in 2002.

Tressel, who has served as Ohio's lieutenant governor since February, was surprised with the news inside the Buckeyes' locker room in an event attended by athletic director Ross Bjork, head coach Ryan Day and several of Tressel's former Ohio State players.

“Growing up in Ohio, Ohio Stadium was about as special a place as there could be for a Buckeye fan. Then, when you have the privilege of spending so many years on the field as a coach, you never really think about something like this,” Tressel said in a statement. “You just try to honor the tradition, respect the responsibility that comes with it, and do your very best each day.”

Tressel will become just the third former Ohio State coach in the ring of honor, joining legendary coaches Woody Hayes and Paul Brown. His placard will be placed next to Hayes'.

Ohio State hasn't added anyone to its ring of honor since 2014, when Heisman-winning quarterback Troy Smith — who played under Tressel — was inducted.
