Ohio State, Ryan Day Making Earlier Push for 2028 QB Target

The Ohio State Buckeyes and head coach Ryan Day have maintained their strong presence on the high school recruitment trail throughout the offseason.

With the 2026 college football season right around the corner, the Buckeyes are still a consensus top-10 program within the 2027 recruiting cycle. However, all eyes will be on Day and his coaching staff for the 2028 class, as Ohio State continues to generate noise in the upcoming cycle during the month of July.

According to Rivals' Hayes Fawcett last week, 2028 four-star quarterback Lukas Prock is down to five schools, with the Day and the Buckeyes in the mix.

Can Ohio State Secure Prock?

Prock, a well-regarded quarterback prospect on the East Coast, has quickly risen through the ranks within the 2028 recruiting class. As of this month, the playmaker is the No. 3 prospect in the state of New Jersey, as well as the No. 6 quarterback in the 2028 recruiting cycle, per 247Sports' Composite.

Throughout his sophomore season at Hun High School, Prock put up video-game numbers, recording 4,330 passing yards, 41 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. In addition to his electric play in the passing game, Prock demonstrated that he is capable of being a force in the run game, finishing the year with 154 rushing yards and one touchdown.

In order for the Buckeyes to secure a commitment from Prock, the highly-touted program must compete against the likes of the Michigan Wolverines and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Currently, none of the schools in Prock's top five possesses a quarterback commit, but Day's potential 2028 class could be one of the best in the nation if Prock joins the mix.

Ohio State's 2028 class is already filled with top prospects, such as two five-stars in wide receiver Jett Harrison and EDGE Jameer Whyce, along with four-star running back Elijah Newman-Hall. The Buckeyes hold the No. 2 class in the 2028 cycle, but a commitment from Prock could push the program into the No. 1 spot.
