Ohio State's Future Playoff Schedule Released, and It Is a Disaster

For a committee and an organization that loves nothing more than their postseason tournament, they simply cannot seem to figure out the proper schedule for it.

On Monday, the College Football Playoff released the schedule for the 2026-27 tournament, and it is completely all over the place. Let's map this out from a timing perspective.

If everything goes as planned, the Buckeyes will play their final game against the Michigan Wolverines on November 28th. They will then hopefully compete for a Big Ten Championship on December 5th, just one week after that.

Then, the first round of the playoff isn't until December 19th, which is actually good. Give every team a bye week before the playoffs, I'm ok with that. What comes next is as good as garbage.

It is then a 10 or 11-day wait to play on New Year's Day before another two-week delay before the semifinals, which are being played on Thursday and Friday night, before another two-week wait before another Monday night National Championship.

The final day of the 2026-27 college football season is Monday January 25, 2027.

The schedule is completely and totally egregious, especially considering this sport's biggest issue is the schedule. Without even getting into the implications of all of the other aspects of college football, such as the transfer portal and spring semester, this schedule in a vacuum is truly insane.

There is absolutely no reason that the National Championship isn't being played on January 1st. Instead, it is actually being played 3.5 weeks after that.

There is so much wasted time between games for no reason. I'm truly okay with the built-in bye week after the conference championship week. It gives the teams that competed for their conference titles a chance to get as healthy as possible. OK, that is fair.

Every other two-week break is categorically insane, and this schedule is a disaster. It is the root of all problems with college football, and it is such an easy fix.

College football analyst Josh Pate said it best. The mathematical midway point of the entire season is November 17th, one week from rivalry week.

That is horrible and again, it is the root of all that is wrong with the sport right now.
