Oklahoma aims to end losing streak to Georgia on Saturday

The Oklahoma Sooners head to Athens, Ga., to take on the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs in the first-ever regular-season matchup between the two proud programs. The Sooners and Bulldogs have met only once before.
That is a game many Sooner fans have wanted to forget. In the 2017 season, the Bulldogs knocked off the Sooners in the first-round of the then-four team College Football Playoff. That has gone down as one of the best games in playoff and Rose Bowl history.
The Sooners, led by head coach Lincoln Riley, jumped out to a 31-17 lead at halftime, but their performance fell off in the second half. Oklahoma was outscored 14-0 in the third quarter to tie things up. Georgia then took a fourth-quarter lead after a Baker Mayfield interception.
Mayfield eventually led the Sooners on a six-play, 88-yard drive to tie things up at 38. The defense then forced a fumble on the next possession, and Steven Parker took it back for a touchdown with just under seven minutes left. Ultimately, Oklahoma couldn't keep that lead as Georgia tied it up and sent it to overtime.
In the first overtime, the two traded field goals. In the second overtime, Oklahoma's Austin Seibert had his field goal blocked. Georgia running back Sony Michel would score a touchdown to win the game for the Bulldogs, sending them to the national championship game.
Mayfield finished 23-35 for 287 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He also scored a receiving touchdown. Running back Rodney Anderson ran for 201 yards and two scores on 26 carries. However, the Bulldogs, led by Michel and Nick Chubb, ran for 317 yards and five scores.
Nearly nine years later, Oklahoma and Georgia finally meet again, this time in Athens and as SEC opponents. The circumstances are completely different, but the memory of that Rose Bowl remains inseparable from the matchup. For the Sooners, Saturday offers the first chance to beat Georgia and add a new chapter to a series that currently belongs entirely to the Bulldogs.
