On Saturday evening, the Oklahoma football program had about as ugly a win as you will ever see with a 14-6 home victory over New Mexico. Any concerns about quarterback John Mateer and the offense from last week’s game against the Michigan Wolverines were only exacerbated in this one, although the Sooners did improve to 2-1 on the season.

Mateer tossed two touchdowns on the evening, one of which came to wide receiver Isaiah Satenga III, and after the game, he revealed the unconventional way that he realized the receiver was open.

John Mateer says he heard the fans ‘screaming’ and so he knew someone had to be open and that’s when he saw Sategna,” reported George Stoia III of Sooner Scoop on X, formerly Twitter.

Needless to say, fans in the comment section weren’t thrilled that their quarterback had to rely on audio cues in order to spot an open man down the field.

“Just a terrible answer,” wrote one fan.

“I knew he couldn’t read defenses by himself. Sucks for him he won’t get that help next weekend in Athens,” added another, referencing Oklahoma’s upcoming game against the Georgia Bulldogs.

There have been questions about Mateer’s viability as the starting quarterback in Norman dating back to last season, and those have only continued to grow so far in 2026.

While the Oklahoma defense has held up its end of the bargain so far, there will be a hard ceiling on how far this team can go unless the offense gets it together in a hurry.
