The Oklahoma Sooners have one of the best recruiting classes in the 2027 cycle, and a big reason is Gabriel Osborne.
The Oklahoma Sooners just added another five-star to their 2027 recruiting class. Cornerback commit Gabriel Osborne earned five-star designations from both 247Sports and Rivals, giving OU two five-star commits alongside Cooper Hackett. This was inevitable.
We said months ago that Osborne would reach this point. He was a four-star with a meteoric rise, and the tape he was putting out there made it only a matter of time. His size, his athleticism, and the level he was playing at all pointed in one direction. Now the rankings have caught up.
The Sooners technically have 2 five-stars, with a caveat
Hackett and Osborne give Oklahoma two five-star commits in the 2027 cycle. However, one recruiting service did knock Hackett down to a four-star because of his injury. That demotion feels more like a technicality than a reflection of his talent. So, depending on which site you check, the Sooners either have two or three five-stars, with tight end Seneca Driver being there as well. Regardless, the talent in this class speaks for itself.
Osborne is one of the Sooners’ favorite cornerback recruits in a long time. The coaching staff loves what he brings to the table, and for good reason. The combination of his frame, his ball skills, and the growth he’s shown over the past year made this five-star bump feel like a formality rather than a surprise.
Osborne could fight for reps as a true freshman
Here’s the thing about Oklahoma’s cornerback room: the Sooners have shown they are willing to play true freshmen if they can handle it. Courtland Guillory, who was much smaller than Osborne, probably less athletic, and a three-star recruit, started every game for OU last year as a true freshman. Size doesn’t always dictate everything at the cornerback position, but it certainly doesn’t hurt.
If Guillory could earn a starting role under those circumstances, there’s no reason Osborne can’t compete for reps when he arrives on campus. Whether it’s fall or spring camp, Osborne will get his opportunity. The question is simply whether he can seize it, and everything we’ve seen so far suggests he can.
The Sooners continue to stack talent in the secondary, and Osborne’s reclassification to five-star status only reinforces what the coaching staff already knew. Gabriel Osborne can play.
