The Oklahoma Sooners had several current and former players on the stage with country music star Luke Combs on Saturday night.
We have hardly seen Oklahoma Sooners quarterback John Mateer in the light we saw him in on Saturday. Then again, he’s only been in Oklahoma for just over a full year.
He spent the last few years before his initial season at OU in Washington state. But Mateer really spends his time working on his craft. His first year in Oklahoma, we didn’t really see him out and about much, just a Chipotle story here and there. He’s not the type of player to be out and about and all in the media.
That’s a good thing, especially for a QB. Not that it means a QB is better than any other QB, but we have all seen the type of trouble some of these guys can get into when they’re always out partying and such.

What Mateer did on Saturday was different, and it was kind of awesome. Country music star Luke Combs was on tour in Norman, Oklahoma, and performed at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. And in attendance were several OU players, former and current. Creed Humphrey, Danny Stutsman, Mateer, Lane Johnson, and even tight ends coach Jason Witten were all on stage with Witten Saturday night.
That part isn’t abnormal; we see it all the time, especially with guys like Morgan Wallen. Country music stars, and really any type of music stars, tend to bring local stars out on the stage. However, how often does the coach and quarterback of that team shotgun a beer with the artist? I would say almost never.
But, admittedly, it was pretty cool to watch. These guys are local stars, and they should live like it every once in a while. Most of the time, they are busy with their loves as professional athletes. They dedicate their love to it. Let them have a bit of fun.
