The Oklahoma Sooners could need one of their true freshmen to step it up in a major way in the 2026 season.

One thing is for certain: Every single year with the Oklahoma Sooners football program, they will always have a good defense as long as Brent Venables is the head coach.

The Sooners also recruit well on that side of the ball under Venables. You will always have younger players who are ready for what the SEC brings. Last year, it was true freshman cornerback Courtland Guillory, who surprised everyone. This year, it could be any one of the 2026 freshman class. However, there is a guy who’s already making waves, and because of the way the roster is built, he could play as a freshman at the Cheetah position.

"Niko's [Jandreau, safety] a guy that's a ball magnet. Plays incredibly fast, blows dudes up like a missile out there. Niko Jandreau's taking a lot of snaps there," Venables said of the Cheetah position, a hybrid role in Venables’ defense. "Hopefully, we'll have six guys there [safety room]."

Biko Jandreau is getting the attention of his elite teammates, too

Like Guillory, Jandreau was a three-star coming in. Seeing him on the field as a starter may seem impossible, like it did with Guillory. But don’t count out this staff and their ability to get these young guys ready. I’m not saying Jandreau will be a starter, but he’ll play. He’s making too much noise not to see the field.

"Niko has been doing his thing, to be honest," star safety Peyton Bowen said. "He has been diving into that playbook. He's technique-sound. We ask him questions all the time, ‘What's the call?' And he knows it like that. It's a good sight to see for the guys who just came here in the winter."

Niko Jandreau came in with his brother, Beau Jandreau, who’s a linenbacker for OU. Beau was the higher-rated recruit and was initially seen as the guy who would play sooner because of the former roster issue at LB. And that could still happen; however, Niko is making sure everyone knows how good he is.

The Sooners continue to recruit well, despite star ratings or ranking systems. They don’t care about any of that. If they believe you can play, even if you’re a three-star, you’re going to play.
