Oklahoma State and first-year coach Eric Morris couldn't have envisioned a worse start to their 2026 college football season, with the Cowboys opening the year with a road loss to in-state rival Tulsa.
One week later, however, Oklahoma State delivered the biggest upset of the young college football season, as Drew Mestemaker and Co. knocked off No. 6 Oregon, 39-31, on Saturday, Sept. 12, at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
It's funny how college football works sometimes, huh?
"They played fast. That was one of our goals. Everybody counted them out, told them how bad they were. Proud of those kids," an emotional Morris told ESPN's Taylor McGregor after the game on how his team responded from Week 1 to Week 2.
The win for the Cowboys was a long time coming. Between Saturday's upset of Oregon and their previous victory, Oklahoma State endured a coaching change — Mike Gundy was relieved of his duties after a 1-2 start to what became a disastrous 2025 season — and losses that kept piling up to result in one of the longest losing streaks in program history.
So, just how long was the drought? Here's what to know:
Oklahoma State losing streak: How many consecutive losses did Cowboys have?
Before Oklahoma State's win over Oregon on Saturday, the Cowboys had lost 12 consecutive games, a skid that dated back to Week 2 of last season. Ironically, that losing streak began with a 69-3 road loss to the Ducks in Eugene, making Saturday's upset a full-circle moment for the program.
That is 380 calendar days since Oklahoma State's last win on Aug. 28, 2025, against Tennessee-Martin.
In snapping their 12-game losing skid, Oklahoma State made a bit of history: As ESPN noted, the Cowboys became the first FBS team to snap a losing streak of 10 or more games with a victory over an AP top 10 opponent.
Saturday's win marked the eighth win against a top-10 ranked opponent for Oklahoma State since 2013.
