Sometimes it’s just not meant to be. The Oregon Ducks fell short on a key recruiting battle in the secondary out west, but a few commitments to shore up the back end of the defense could still be on the way.
Four-star athlete Bode Sparrow committed to Oklahoma on Friday, choosing the Sooners over BYU, Oregon and Utah. The Ducks and Cougars made the race tight at the end after holding strong official visits with Sparrow earlier this month, but ultimately, the Sooners were front-runners throughout.

Sparrow, who stars as both a wide receiver and safety in Kaysville, Utah, was being targeted as a safety by the Ducks. Oregon built up momentum quickly with Sparrow. After being the final team to earn an official visit, the Ducks ended Sparrow’s trip to Eugene in early June with a strong rapport.
Sparrow is the No. 2 athlete and No. 59 overall player in the class, per Rivals. As a junior, he made 83 receptions for 1,218 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also had 71 tackles last season and seven interceptions. Sparrow has collected a combined 16 interceptions through his sophomore and junior seasons. He has the frame and ability to come downhill and play in the box as an enforcer and solid tackler.
Although the Ducks are missing out on a tremendous player in the secondary, their spirits could be lifted very soon. Oregon is trending for commitments from five-star corner Hayden Stepp and four-star corner Tae Walden Jr., both of whom will commit on July 1.
