Over the past few years, Oregon has always felt like it has an explosive offense. We've seen very good quarterback play, above-average weapons, and Dan Lanning, who has certainly had his fair share of offensive success.
However, heading into this season, it's the defense that continues to get praise. With Dante Moore returning, there's an expectation that Oregon's offense is still going to be above average.
The Ducks have the weapons, an above-average offensive line, and a coaching staff that will help them succeed. Defensively, however, one ESPN reporter believes that's what will separate this team from the others in the Big Ten.
“Defense is where Oregon separates itself from the rest of the Big Ten. The Ducks return their top two sack producers, including linebackers Teitum Tuioti (who had the fourth most sacks in the conference last season) and Matayo Uiagalelei and the core of a secondary that consistently created negative plays.
“Over the past couple of seasons, college football has rewarded teams that can rush the passer without sacrificing coverage. Oregon projects to keep both strengths intact. The schedule helps, too. The Ducks' trip to Ohio State on Nov. 7 is the obvious hurdle, but beyond that, Oregon should be favored nearly every week,” Mark Zinno of ESPN wrote.
Playing in the Big Ten, Oregon has dominated the conference in recent years, aside from beating some of the league's top teams.
However, in the grand scheme of things, Oregon has probably been the best team in the Big Ten over the last two seasons.
This year, it won't have to play Indiana or Penn State, which is always ideal, but it will take on Ohio State in Columbus and return to Eugene to take on Michigan. Those two games will probably be the biggest of the year, so if this defense can be as good as some think it will be, there's no reason to be worried.
