The first week of the college football season has concluded. It did not go like many of us had hoped; some of this can be attributed to the top teams facing elite competition. However, it was pretty clear that some teams were not who we thought they were, and if things don’t improve in the coming weeks, it could be a long year for the conference. While there may not have been as many wins as hoped for, there were still some elite performances that deserve to be recognized.
Offensive Player of the Week
Hauss Hejny (Colorado State)
The Oklahoma State transfer quarterback was sharp in his first game in Fort Collins. He completed 23 of 33 passes for 214 yards and an impressive 5 touchdowns. Hejny also gained 39 yards on the ground and is already cementing himself as a fan favorite after beating their rival Wyoming in convincing fashion.
Defensive Player of the Week
Sailasa Vadrawale III (Oregon State)
The junior defensive back had a great game in Oregon State’s 33-20 loss to Houston. He intercepted a pass that he returned 24 yards and added five tackles.
Special Teams Player of the Week
Jaylon Hawkins (San Diego State)
The freshman wide receiver had a big first game. He had a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and his three returns totaled 141 yards.
Freshman of the Week
Rasean Jones (Boise State)
The Broncos have found their number one wide receiver and it is true freshman Rasean Jones. Jones had the highlight of the game with a spectacular back shoulder, one-handed catch. Jones finished the game with four catches for 76 yards. The future is bright for this young receiver.
