Pat Fitzgerald speaks to the media following MSU's loss to Nebraska

Michigan State football dropped their second straight game, and their first of Big Ten play in 2026. Now sitting at 2-2, and facing a handful of injuries, the Spartans are going to have to maneuver their way back into the win column to put the season back on track.

Following the tough 31-13 loss to Nebraska, head coach Pat Fitzgerald spoke to the media, where he was obviously disappointed in his team's performance.

See what the Spartans head man had to say about the game:

  • "Congratulations to Nebraska, they have a very good football team. We made enough mistakes to make it easy for them. We have to play with more discipline. The amount of penalties and mistakes, that's on me. The key thing is we have to stay together."
  • "You can't beat yourself. It's my responsibility to get fixed. We have untimely penalties. We played so poorly, those (the Brantley hit, the holding on a punt), it doesn't matter."
  • "I have no updates on the injured players, we are waiting further testing."
  • "My challenge in the locker room afterwards was that 'some of you got your taste in the Big Ten.'"
  • "If they don't show up (ready to work), I'll tell them go back to their dorm, their apartment. We'll play with the guys who want to."
  • "I cannot ask the fans to do anything other than show up,"
  • "A lack of focus and discipline, and that's on me, as a head coach."
  • “We have a lot of football left. We have eight (games) left. You get to work, that’s what you do…”
  • “I knew what I was getting into when I came here. We are rebuilding a program one step at a time.”
  • “I think we are a work in progress. We are not quite there yet, and that is on us as coaches…”
  • "I thought there were two plays that looked very similar. One was upheld, and the other had 'indisputable video evidence.' I look forward to seeing the alternate angles that overturned it."
  • “We need to take care of the football first. We will put together a plan to get that corrected and fixed.”
  • “Ive gotta look at the tape and get a sense of where those errors were offensively. He’s a really intelligent young man, who I know cares, so he will work his tail off.”
  • “I thought Jazz Patterson ran his tail off.”
