Will OU football make staff changes? Brent Venables 'not there right now'

ATHENS, GA — Brent Venables isn't quite ready to talk about potential staff changes or a restructuring of responsibilities.

"I'm not there right now," Venables said. "Trying to figure out what we need to do to get better and get ready for Texas and the rest of our season."

The latest questions surrounding OU football coaching staff — specifically on offense — come after yet another disappointing showing. The Sooners were demolished, 41-13, by No. 2 Georgia — largely due to committing four turnovers.

Despite the turnovers, OU managed to move the ball a lot better than it did the two weeks prior. The Sooners had more yards than the Bulldogs for most of the game.

Quarterback John Mateer completed 25 of his 34 passes for 231 yards and turned the ball over three times, twice fumbling and once tossing an interception. Another issue plaguing the Sooners — they still haven't managed to figure anything out on the ground, rushing for 65 yards on 35 attempts.

While Venables isn't ready to talk staff changes, the questions will continue during the bye week with No. 1 Texas up next at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.

Internally, the staff will also be asking questions.

"We have to look back at ourselves over these first four weeks," offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle said. "What are our tendencies that we have? What's been good for us? What's been bad for us? How can we get better at the things that we struggle with?"
