Penn State will be without one of its best offensive weapons for a while.
Head coach Matt Campbell announced on Wednesday, Sept. 23, that wide receiver Koby Howard will be out for “an extended period of time,” per Penn State reporter Zach Seyko on X. However, he confirmed the injury isn’t season-ending.
Howard got hurt during his 70-yard touchdown reception against Buffalo on Saturday, a game Penn State won 55-13. The Nittany Lions are 3-0 and ranked No. 13 in the AP poll heading into Big Ten play.

Howard has been fantastic for Penn State this season, compiling 12 receptions for 344 yards and two touchdowns. He has already surpassed his totals from last year, when he finished with only seven receptions for 133 yards.
Who will step up in Koby Howard’s absence?
Wide receiver Chase Sowell will have to step up significantly. He’s second on the team with 126 receiving yards and must become an even bigger threat.
Tight end Benjamin Brahmer, who has seven receptions for 97 yards and three touchdowns through three games, will also get more targets in the passing game while Howard is on the mend.
Wide receiver Brett Eskildsen, who has nine receptions for 83 yards and a touchdown, will be an option for quarterback Rocco Becht.
Penn State will open Big Ten play Saturday at home against Wisconsin. Kickoff will be at 5 p.m. ET on Peacock.
