Penn State surprisingly lands on list of best college football helmets

You tend to get grandfathered into things when you’re a team that’s been around for as long as Penn State has. That’s exactly what happened with the latest ranking from USA TODAY’s Paul Myerberg, where he listed the 25 best helmets in college football.

The Nittany Lions made the list at No. 19, but that might even come as a shock to some of the team’s fans. The helmet is nothing special — mostly white with a single blue stripe — and Myerberg even mentioned it in his explanation, calling the helmet, “proudly plain.”

However, he acknowledged that it was hard to exclude Penn State given the team’s history and how the helmet relates to the program. This may be one of the only lists the Nittany Lions don’t mind being behind some Big Ten rivals on, but there are still a few ahead of them.

The most notable are Ohio State and Michigan, who both came in at No. 3 and No. 1 on the list respectively. It’s no surprise that two of the most iconic teams in college football, with some of the best uniform combinations, get two of the top spots in this ranking.
