Former Penn State quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer has found new life with Virginia Tech.

Penn State football is most definitely wishing that it had Ethan Grunkemeyer back at the controls of the offense.

Grunkemeyer is showing off the kind of skills that made him a top recruit. He would sign with the Nittany Lions under James Franklin, but struggled at quarterback.

Enter a new way of life for Grunkemeyer and Franklin, as the two reunited at Virginia Tech.

The Hokies have won their first four games of the season and jumped out to a commanding lead on Pittsburgh Friday night in ACC action.

And Grunkemeyer is the reason for all of it.

Ethan Grunkemeyer Making Penn State Jealous With His Season

Grunkemeyer started super fast against the unbeaten Panthers. He completed 7 of 9 for 123 yards and a touchdown to Que’Sean Brown. Along with all of that production, he scored from a yard out to give Virginia Tech an early two-touchdown edge on ESPN.

That is just the kind of season the Ohio native is having.

Through four games, Grunkemeyer was 101 of 136 for 1,012 yards and eight touchdowns. In addition to completing over 74 percent of his passes, he had not thrown an interception. Add in two rushing scores, and his numbers dwarf those of his replacement, Rocco Becht.

Grunkemeyer has two 300-yard passing games, with a high of 327 vs. Old Dominion. He has also thrown a touchdown in each contest, including the Pittsburgh one.

Penn State Saw Flashes Of What Ethan Grunkemeyer Was Capable Of

While at Happy Valley, Grunkemeyer produced, throwing for eight touchdowns and over 1,300 yards. But he lacked the “wow” factor that most were expecting.

Grunkemeyer signed with Penn State after a standout senior season. He had just one offer going into his final year of high school to Miami of Ohio, but was ranked among the best quarterbacks in his class by several outlets.

He finished his prep career as the all-time leading passer in yards and touchdowns at Olentangy High School. Grunkemeyer was a three-year starter, throwing for over 3,500 yards and 39 touchdowns as a senior.

After enrolling at Penn State, he sat behind Drew Allar and Beau Pribula. Grunkemeyer was elevated to backup after Pribula transferred, playing in one game in 2024.

Last year, he went 4-3 in seven starts, making 11 appearances.

Penn State In Action At The Same Time As Grunkemeyer, Franklin

Ironically enough, the Nittany Lions are set to take to the field Friday night. Penn State will play Northwestern in a key Big Ten Conference matchup.

First-year head coach Matt Campbell, who brought Becht with him from Iowa State, and Penn State are coming off a tough loss to Wisconsin last week.
