Pitt football left Blacksburg with a huge 35-33 win versus Virginia Tech on Friday night, but how many more big moments can the Panthers produce in 2026? Sophomore quarterback Mason Heintschel, who impressed fans plenty over the last five weeks, will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn ACL, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Heintschel exited versus the Hokies early in the third quarter after completing 10-of-18 passes for 113 yards and one touchdown. Somehow, Pittsburgh survived a Virginia Tech surge in the fourth and improved to 5-0 on the campaign. An ACC title game appearance seemed like a realistic goal, but now, Pat Narduzzi’s program will have to work mighty hard to compensate for No. 6’s absence.

Heintschel will end the year with a 66.2 completion percentage, 1,304 passing yards, 15 total touchdowns and only one interception. He elevated his game from 2025, and consequently, the Panthers took another leap forward. The college football-watching world might not get the chance to see how good this squad really is, as an Oct. 24 road matchup versus Miami will have much less buzz around it now. That was always going to be a grueling test, though.

Pitt can afford a loss to the Hurricanes, but meetings with North Carolina and Louisville just got much harder. Holden Geriner filled in admirably for Mason Heintschel, completing 8-of-12 passes for 78 yards and one TD. The Auburn and Texas State transfer will try to maximize this opportunity and help the Panthers stay in ACC contention.
