Local high school varsity football teams are ushering in the new season, and several teams put up eye-opening numbers and delivered key performances in an intense Week 3.
Here are a few players who stood out in the third week of Section 4 high school football. Who is the Guthrie Football Athlete of the Week?
Michael Mackey (Johnson City, WR/DB, sr.): Led Johnson City’s defensive effort in a 13-0 shutout win against Susquehanna Valley, catching three interceptions and scoring the Wildcats’ only touchdown.
Jay Richards Jr. (Corning, RB/DB, jr.): Scored two of Corning’s five rushing touchdowns in a dominant 64-27 win against Binghamton, rushing for 113 yards and averaging 11.3 per carry.
Bryce Thomas (Horseheads, RB, sr.): Rushed for 101 yards, averaging 14.4 yards per carry, and scored two rushing touchdowns in the 21-15 win over divisional powerhouse Union-Endicott.
Chase Jervis (Oneonta, QB, jr.): Threw four touchdowns and went 10-for-14 for 202 passing yards. Jervis also rushed for 129 yards and another four touchdowns in Oneonta’s 66-44 win against Norwich.
Jasmir Robbins (Ithaca, RB, jr.): Robbins rushed for 169 yards and caught two passes for 45 yards, for three touchdowns in Ithaca's nail-biting 31-30 win against Section 3's Homer.
