On Saturday evening, the USC football team defeated Washington 25-21 at the Coliseum. With the victory, the Trojans improved to 5-1 on the season and 2-1 in Big Ten play.
What went well for USC, and what went poorly? Here are some positives and negatives from the game:
Positive: Tanook Hines
After a quiet start to the season, Hines had his best game of the year to date. The sophomore wide receiver caught five passes for 51 yards and a touchdown.
Positive: Lachlan Carrigan
The Trojans’ punter may very well have been their best player on Saturday. He had two punts that pinned Washington inside of its own 5-yard line.
(Mostly) Positive: The defense
USC’s defense did have several of its usual inexplicable mistakes. Washington’s offense is also not very good. That said, the Trojans do deserve some credit for holding a Big Ten opponent to 21 points—while also scoring seven of its own.
Negative: Jayden Maiava
Maiava was by no means horrible against Washington, but he looked a bit off throughout the game. USC’s starting quarterback completed 21 of his 34 pass attempts for 245 yards, one touchdown, and a rather ugly interception.
Negative: Penalties
USC committed nine penalties for 84 yards. Penalties have been a problem for this team throughout the season, and that was once again the case on Saturday.
Negative: Terrell Anderson
Anderson has quite possibly been the biggest disappointment of the season thus far for the Trojans. Against Washington, he did not catch a single pass, and had a muffed punt that set up USC’s offense at its own 1-yard line.
