SEC football analysts are being diplomatic about Arkansas

When reading a dry transcript of a press conference or a written column which doesn't have any video attached to it, sports fans might not get the nuances which emerge when they are able to see and hear a commentator talk. Such was the case with On3 Sports college football analyst JD Pickell, who talked to John Nabors of Inside Arkansas at SEC media days in Tampa. You can watch the video for yourself.

You can see and hear how delicate Pickell is when talking about the 2026 Razorbacks. He refrained from using blistering or blunt language. He said about the Arkansas football roster that "there's not a lot that gets the blood pumping." That's a polite way of saying this team just isn't expected to be good. Pickell and Nabors settled on the basic idea that if Arkansas football is going to overachieve, it will be because the Hogs out-execute their opponents. In other words, they sure aren't going to win with talent. They will have to be smarter, more opportunistic, more clever, more efficient, more responsible.

We're not bagging on Pickell – anything but. He's right, and he's being kind instead of being merciless, which some analysts could choose to do. We make the point about "diplomatic language" because, quite frankly, that's the best way to view this team and program going into the season. The Razorbacks do not have a lot going for them. We wouldn't want you to think they do. They are expected to be in the bottom tier of the SEC. Their coach was not the rock star of the coaching carousel, and Auburn's Alex Golesh is widely (correctly) viewed as the better coach than Ryan Silverfield, which Arkansas fans aren't going to forget unless or until Silverfield shows he is in Golesh's league.

Arkansas football is in a very unenviable situation. The Hogs had their Chad Morris moment several years ago. They thought they had escaped that version of gridiron hell when Sam Pittman did a terrific job in his first few seasons and temporarily rescued UA from SEC misery. However, the Razorbacks fell back into the ditch and have the unpleasant process of trying to climb out of it once again. JD Pickell's analysis only underscores the point that Arkansas is starting from ground zero once again.

Hopefully, UA will not have to deal with this kind of situation for a long time. If the program regains relevance, it simply can't lose the plot afterward. That cycle needs to be broken, but first things first: The 2026 team has to begin the road back to respectability.
