With the LSU football program adding former NFL players to its roster after court rulings permitted them to return to college football, there has been a bevy of backlash heading the school’s way, whether it be from the public or the SEC itself. As the SEC sued the LSU football program and Kiffin for the intention to add these ex-NFL players, one president in the conference sent a warning to the university and Kiffin.
While controversy has always surrounded Kiffin, it’s not stopping anytime soon. With the Tigers looking to add such former NFL players like tight end Dae’Quan Wright and defensive lineman Zxavian Harris, who were on the rosters of the Cleveland Browns and New Orleans Saints, respectively, one SEC president tells On3 Sports that their actions are a “dangerous road” to travel.
“Coach Kiffin has been the one taking the heat on all this, but you have to wonder who is genuinely calling the shots (at LSU),” the anonymous president said. “It’s a dangerous road to be traveling because Commissioner Sankey has our full support to impose whatever sanctions he feels are warranted. Perhaps we will find out if LSU wants to be a member of the SEC.”

There’s no denying that the LSU football team will be one of the top stories this season with the added former NFL players, as the SEC’s recent filed complaint called them out for the recruitment of these controversial athletes. The conference claims the Tigers “waged a deliberate and coordinated campaign to recruit professional athletes to play football for LSU during the 2026-27 season,” via On3 Sports.
However, a Louisiana judge would grant that LSU can field these players, according to Pete Thamel of ESPN.
“NEWS: Injunction granted by Judge William Jorden, paving the way for NCAA and SEC eligibility for more than 40 athletes. That group includes potential LSU transfers Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris,” Thamel wrote.
At any rate, it remains to be seen what actions are taken next, as the Tigers take the field on Saturday for the opener against Clemson.
