Well, if Michigan didn’t bop the Okies and even its record at 1-1 Saturday, the kid would have crafted a perfecto.
But the $10.5 million man with the $50 mill buyout before 2031, Brent Venables proved once again that a great coordinator doesn’t make a great CEO.
Coach is flush. But Boomer Sooner Busted.
Other than that, The Big Bounce Back.
Pittsburgh, Boise State, Texas, Indiana, Alabama and Louisville all prevailed.
As predicticated here.
6-1, and I now stand 14-7 for the campaign.
CoachSpeak of the Week: A school without football is in danger of deteriorating into a medieval study hall. — Frank Leahy
This week’s winners:
Louisiana State @ Mississippi. If you have ever watched an EPL fixture, you know what I’m talking about when I mention security. There are literally neon yellow-jacketed security guards at both ends of every row of the visitors’ section. Hooliganism. Well, the OxfordTown Police Dept. has but a hundred or so officers. I hope none of them is expecting time off this weekend. Reinforcements have been called in. The good ol’ boys from Plaquemine will be in town to root on their Tigers. This is not your ordinary game day. Understand, the whole Kiffin abdication is far from the beginning of hostility between these neighboring rivals. It goes back at least to Halloween night in ’59, both schools undefeated at top of the polls. It was the politically incorrect era when LSU coach Paul Dietzel dubbed his defense, “the Chinese Bandits.” Anyway, Tiger Billy Cannon left many a Johnny Reb eating dirt on an 89 yard punt return for the battle’s only TD. Saturday night in Oxford will be tense. Expect to see guards at Rowan Oak. As well as The Grove. As for the game, I believe LSU is better, but spurned lovers can generate inner fire. Wishful thinking, I suppose. Ole Miss.
Houston @ Texas Tech. In one of the many coincidences of this early season, these league foes have a common opponent already from the Great Northwest and the newly reconstituted PAC Whatever. Oregon State. The Fightin’ Cody Campells won by a dozen in Corvallis. The Cougars, whom I think I picked to make it to the CFP — I’d look it up but I’m too lazy — bested the Beavers at home. By a Baker’s Dozen. Love the lagniappe. Upset Alert. Because in Willie Fritz I believe. Houston.
North Carolina @ Clemson. Fascinating ACC matchup, this one. Coach Curmudgeon Chapel Bill Belichick is easy to dislike. Ever cranky, cut off sweatshirt, etc, etc. But he knows a thing or two about a thing or two when it comes to football. So he looked at his faceplant of a first season on Tobacco Road, and changed some things. Unlike his counterpart on the other sideline, who has cemented his heels into his way of doing things. Not to menton that the Tar Heel OC, need I say his name, knows how to carry a grudge from a could woulda shoulda L a long time ago. North Carolina.
Florida @ Auburn. The Gators under their new next big thing HC Jon Sumrall are essentially untested. Having chomped some Owls and Camels on successive weekends by a combined 118-24. Now they venture to the Plains to meet the Tigers and their new coach, born a Russkie, Alex Golesh. The home team is also 2-0, against more formidable competition, I might offer. Sumrall, and his G6ish staff will eventually do the denizens of Ben Hill Griffin proud. But this one’s in front of 88,000 at Jordan Hare on a Saturday night with ESPN in the house. A lesson shall be learned. Auburn.
Western Ky @ Indiana. I was about to write that, after this one, the Hoosiers will finally be tested. Then I checked and their next three foes, in league play, are Northwestern, Rutgers and Nebraska. The Toppers coffers get filled. The Toppers’ noggins hope to avoid concussions. IU.
Kentucky @ Texas A&M. Will Stein, you want loud, wait until Saturday. 12th Man is Loud. You’ve experienced SEC football at home. Now get a taste of it on the road. Kenny Minchey, meet the “freak daddies.” A&M.
Southern Methodist @ Louisville. That annual air show celebration at Bowman Field is coming. I’ve seen banners on the fences. Aeronauts Kevin Jennings and Lincoln Kienholz are the top 2 Total Offense guys in the land. Literally. Three hundred passing yards each. Per game. They connect from 60+. It shall be an aerial display worthy of Bowman. The Red Baron. Chuck Yeager. Maybe the Cardinal receiving trio of Richardson, Hurry and McCoy should be nicknamed “The Constellation Corps.” Louisville is ofer the visitors from Dallas all time. Or as Jeff Brohm explained it with this coachspeak malapropism, “Got a great opponent coming in here in SMU that we have not beat since we’ve played them.” It’s about time. By sundown Saturday, the two teams will have just played, giving the Cards an opportunity to beat them when playing them. Finally they shall. U of L.
