A woman told Ann Arbor police she visited former Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore the day after she said a football staffer raped her in 2024, but Ann Arbor police said they were not aware of the sexual assault allegation until this year, according to newly released records.

Moore's involvement in the case became known through the Detroit Free Press — part of the USA TODAY Network — which successfully appealed the Ann Arbor police's decision to withhold his name from records released through a public records request under Michigan law.

Moore was fired with cause by Michigan on December 10, 2025 after the university found "credible evidence "that he had engaged in an inappropriate relationship" with his former assistant, Paige Shriver.

As noted by the Free Press, the university won't comment on the situation, and Ann Arbor police haven't answered questions about why Moore's name was initially withheld from records.

The former Michigan staffer who was being investigated by Ann Arbor police in relation to the sexual assault allegations was LaTroy Lewis. The Atlanta Falcons fired Lewis on Friday, Feb. 27, 2026 after the NFL franchise said it was aware of the allegations against Lewis and was gathering information.

An Ann Arbor police spokesman confirmed to the Free Press in August that the department closed the investigation without charging Lewis. The Free Press also noted the university recently agreed to pay the woman and her lawyer a $1.2 million settlement — which was revealed through a FOIA request by the Free Press — in late August.

The unredacted report with Moore's name mentioned states the woman contacted Moore the day after Lewis allegedly raped her in 2024. Moore did not become the Wolverines' head coach until January 2024, as he served as Jim Harbaugh's offensive coordinator until Harbaugh left for the NFL and the Los Angeles Chargers.

"The next day, she reported the incident to SHERRONE MOORE, who was the head coach of University of Michigan Football at the time and also a mandated reporter. MOORE stated he would handle it…," the updated police report states, according to the Free Press.

"The conversation with MOORE was through Snapchat audio. LEWIS later called [the woman] 16 times the same day she reported the incident to MOORE."

Moore's lawyer, Ellen Michaels, denied any wrongdoing in February to the Free Press. Earlier this week, Michaels declined to note whether Moore received the allegation of rape and properly reported it to university officials or if Moore never received the complaint to the Free Press.

Moore 17-8 overall in his two seasons as Michigan's full-time head coach.
