Scales, who married Braxton in 2019, became a familiar face to viewers through “Braxton Family Values.”

Von Scales, the husband of singer and reality television personality Trina Braxton, has died at 58. Scales’ death was confirmed Thursday by a representative for the Braxton family, who asked for privacy as loved ones mourn.

TMZ reported that Scales died around 2 a.m. Thursday in Atlanta. Sources close to the family said he had been dealing with heart-related problems, but an official cause of death has not been announced.

Braxton and Scales married Dec. 15, 2019, at Windows on Washington in St. Louis after getting engaged earlier that year. Their ceremony included Braxton’s sisters Toni, Tamar, Traci and Towanda, along with other relatives and close friends, and was filmed for “Braxton Family Values.”

Scales became a familiar face to viewers through his relationship with Braxton, but he also built a career outside reality television as an entrepreneur. The couple had been open about blending their families and supporting one another through difficult periods.

Before their marriage, Braxton spoke publicly about how Scales supported her after the 2018 death of her former husband, Gabe Solis. She said he stood by her as she grieved, a period that overlapped with the early stages of their relationship.

The Braxton family has experienced several losses in recent years, including the 2022 death of Trina’s sister Traci Braxton following a battle with esophageal cancer. The family’s newer reality series has also documented how the sisters and their mother, Evelyn Braxton, have continued navigating grief together.

A representative for the family said Scales was Braxton’s “beloved husband” and thanked the public for its thoughts and prayers while asking for privacy. No official cause of death had been announced as of Thursday.
