Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891. Throughout its history, the Vols have played on Sept. 2 six times and have a 6-0 record.
Tennessee last played on Sept. 2 in 2023, defeating Virginia, 49-13, at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee.
Quarterback Joe Milton III started for the Vols and completed 21-of-30 passing attempts for 201 yards and two touchdowns. He also totaled 33 rushing yards and two touchdowns on nine attempts.
Jaylen Wright led Tennessee in rushing yards (115) and Dylan Sampson scored three rushing touchdowns against the Cavaliers.
Ramel Keyton led the Vols in receiving yards (66) and Squirrel White was Tennessee's leader for receptions (six). Jacob Warren and Sampson scored one receiving touchdown each in the Vols' season opener.
Tennessee also defeated Colorado State (1989), East Carolina (1995), Southern Miss (2000), California (2006) and Bowling Green (2021) at Neyland Stadium on Sept. 2 in program history.
