Texas A&M, Kentucky Renew Rare SEC Series At Kyle Field

Texas A&M’s SEC opener brings a familiar opponent back to Kyle Field, even if the Aggies and Kentucky have barely seen each other over the years.

The Aggies host the Wildcats on Sept. 19 in just the fourth meeting between the programs and only the second since Texas A&M joined the SEC. Texas A&M leads the all-time series 2-1 and has won the past two matchups.

The last meeting came in 2018, when the Aggies escaped with a 20-14 overtime victory over No. 13 Kentucky in one of the most physical games of that season.

That night also carries an interesting connection to the present.

Mike Elko was in his first season as Texas A&M’s defensive coordinator, and his unit completely smothered a Kentucky offense built around star running back Benny Snell Jr.

The Wildcats managed only 178 total yards and never ran an offensive snap on the A&M side of midfield.

Snell, who entered that game as the SEC’s leading rusher at 127.8 yards per game, was limited to 60 yards on 13 carries.

Texas A&M’s offense leaned heavily on Trayveon Williams, who finished with 138 rushing yards on 24 carries while adding six receptions for 72 yards.

The Aggies appeared to have control after taking a 14-7 lead in the fourth quarter, but things quickly got complicated. Kellen Mond lost a fumble that Kentucky safety Darius West returned 40 yards for a touchdown, tying the game with 4:17 remaining.

Overtime delivered the drama.

Kentucky missed a 43-yard field goal when the attempt hit the crossbar. Four plays later, Williams ended the game with a 10-yard touchdown run.

“It was a tough, physical football game,” then-head coach Jimbo Fisher said afterward, praising A&M’s ability to keep battling through mistakes.

Now Elko gets Kentucky from a completely different seat.

Texas A&M enters the 2026 matchup looking to protect an unbeaten start and establish early momentum in conference play.

The Aggies’ schedule gets considerably tougher immediately afterward, with a road game at LSU scheduled for Sept. 26.

Kentucky, meanwhile, returns to College Station for the first time since that bruising 2018 defeat.

For two SEC programs that almost never meet, there’s more history here than the small sample size suggests … and Elko happens to sit right in the middle of it.
