R.C. Slocum hasn't coached a game at Kyle Field in nearly 24 years, and his presence outside of it is about to become permanent.
Texas A&M will unveil a statue honoring its all-time winningest head football coach on Sept. 4.
The ceremony is scheduled for 2 p.m. in the north plaza outside Kyle Field, one day before the Aggies open their 2026 season against Missouri State.
And there might not be a much more fitting place for Slocum's latest honor.
Slocum spent 30 years coaching at Texas A&M across two stints, first arriving as an assistant under Emory Bellard in 1972 before eventually becoming the Aggies' head coach ahead of the 1989 season.
What followed was the most successful head-coaching tenure in program history.

Slocum went 123-47-2 across 14 seasons from 1989-2002, making him Texas A&M's all-time winningest head coach.
He never posted a losing season and led the Aggies to four conference championships, including three consecutive Southwest Conference titles from 1991-93 and the 1998 Big 12 championship.
That final conference title produced one of the defining wins of Slocum's career.
Texas A&M upset No. 1 Kansas State 36-33 in double overtime in the 1998 Big 12 Championship Game, securing the Aggies' first Big 12 title.
Slocum's teams also reached 11 bowl games during his tenure.
Now he'll become a permanent part of the stadium's surroundings.

According to Good Bull Hunting, Slocum will become the only former Texas A&M coach honored with a statue outside Kyle Field.
He'll join former Aggies E. King Gill, the original 12th Man, and 1957 Heisman Trophy winner John David Crow among former A&M football figures with statues in Aggieland.
The Slocum statue was sculpted by Steven Whyte, who also created the Crow statue originally unveiled in 2010.
It's hardly the first honor Slocum has received since his coaching career ended.
He was inducted into the Texas A&M Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2012. He's also a member of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and has returned to serve Texas A&M as interim athletic director three times, in 2019, 2022 and 2024.
But this one will be a little harder for anyone walking into Kyle Field to miss.
Slocum spent three decades coaching at Texas A&M and won more games as its head coach than anyone else.
Beginning Sept. 4 … there will be a permanent reminder waiting outside the stadium where he won so many of them.
