Texas A&M’s Next Step Is Clear: Marcel Reed Must Deliver in Big Games

Texas A&M football enters 2026 with a problem most programs would love to have: Mike Elko has built a legitimate contender, but simply being good isn’t good enough anymore.
The Aggies went 11-0 before consecutive losses to Texas and Miami ended a potentially historic 2025 season. Now the spotlight falls directly on quarterback Marcel Reed, offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins and an A&M roster that has already demonstrated it can reach the College Football Playoff.

The next challenge is learning how to finish.
Reed’s overall 2025 numbers were impressive. He completed 62.1 percent of his passes for 3,169 yards, 25 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, while adding 493 rushing yards and six touchdowns.
He generated 3,662 yards of total offense and established himself as one of the SEC’s most dangerous dual-threat quarterbacks.
But his season also came with a glaring warning sign.
Reed entered the Texas game with just eight interceptions. He finished the season with 12, meaning four of his 12 interceptions came during A&M’s final two games against Texas and Miami.
That’s where Wiggins could become one of the most important additions in College Station.
Reed is at his most dangerous when defenses have to account for his legs as well as his arm. He rushed for 108 yards against LSU last season and produced six rushing touchdowns overall.
An offense that consistently forces opponents to defend Reed outside the pocket could make an already dangerous A&M attack considerably harder to handle.
The defense has something to prove, too.
Texas A&M entered last year’s playoff matchup allowing 127.1 rushing yards per game, but the Aggies’ inability to consistently control the run during their season-ending stretch exposed an issue that can’t follow them into another SEC title chase.
That brings everything back to Elko’s emphasis on making winning plays.
Texas A&M doesn’t need another season proving it belongs among college football’s contenders. Eleven regular-season wins already accomplished that.
The 2026 Aggies have a tougher assignment.
