It would be hard-pressed to find many college football coaches who have favorable things to say about the impact of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL). But Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian has a specific complaint about the controversial system.

While on Marshawn Lynch and Mike Robinson’s ‘Get Got’ podcast, Sarkisian laid out one of the many flaws in the new era of college football.

“So I got a $20 million roster. I got to pay a quarterback, that’s going to play. I’ve got to pay an elite receiver or two, if you want to be really good. I got to pay a pass rusher or two. I got to pay a running back,” Sarkisian said.

“The elite left tackle from whatever state, wherever, you got to want to pay him to get him, right?” he continued. “Let’s call it a signing bonus, whatever it is. That money is coming out of that $20 million, but to say he’s going to go in there and start at left tackle as a true freshman — he’s got to protect that quarterback, and he’s got to block for that running back — in this conference, probably not realistic. So the more money you invest in those young linemen, well, that’s really dead money because it’s a developmental position.”

Several coaches have levied this criticism against the current system, arguing that linemen, because of the size, strength, and teamwork needed to excel as a unit, are at the most risk of being underdeveloped if they transfer to several schools in quick succession.

It remains to be seen if the NCAA will — or can — do anything to curb the effect of NIL and transfers as more and more coaches express their dissatisfaction.
