Texas appears to be the front-runner for a top 2028 quarterback recruiting target. Can the Longhorns finish this one out?
Heading into the 2026 college football season, the Texas Longhorns enter with some very high expectations, and a big reason for that is star quarterback Arch Manning. While this could end up being the last year of Manning starting, the future at quarterback for Austin is very bright. That includes a massive 2028 commitment that could be coming soon.
Elite 2028 Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage quarterback Neimann Lawrence announced that he will be making his college commitment on June 25. The Longhorns, along with Notre Dame and Michigan, were a few of the top contenders to know. It does appear that Texas could be in the driver’s seat heading into that decision.
Rivals’ national recruiting analyst Steve Wiltfong logged an expert prediction for Lawrence to land with the Longhorns. It would be a massive addition for head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns, especially after they just hosted the Florida native for an unofficial visit this past weekend. The momentum is very much in their favor.
Texas has been keeping a smaller 2028 quarterback board thus far. Outside of Lawrence, the only other offers they have extended were to Georgia commit Jayden Wade and Graham Simpson. Lawrence is a natural thrower with as much upside as just about any signal-caller in the 2028 class.
Neimann Lawrence’s recruiting background
Lawrence is considered a four-star, top-100 player by each of the major recruiting platforms. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Lawrence is currently rated as a four-star, the No. 53 overall player, the No. 5 quarterback, and the No. 7 player from the state of Florida for the 2028 recruiting class. Each site views him as a potentially elite signal caller when all is said and done.
As legit as Lawrence’s recruiting rankings are, his offer list might be even better. Some of the top programs that have offered him so far include the Longhorns, Georgia, Ohio State, Alabama, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Michigan, Oregon, Florida, Texas A&M, Miami, Nebraska, Auburn, Florida State, South Carolina, TCU, Arkansas, SMU, Illinois, Virginia Tech, Colorado, Pitt, Arizona State, UCF, West Virginia, Syracuse, and Purdue, among others.
The 6-0.5, 202-pound put together a tremendous sophomore season while with Miami (Fla.) Northwestern in 2025. In ten games, Lawrence managed to throw for 1,971 yards and 32 touchdowns, with just one interception. The Florida native also rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown on just nine carries, an average of 11.6 yards per carry.
Lawrence began his career with Miami (Fla.) Ransom Everglades as a freshman in 2024, throwing for 2,777 yards and 31 touchdowns, while also rushing for four more scores on the ground. He is set to star for American Heritage next season.
