Texas Tech commit Jalen Brewster headlines top 15 defensive linemen entering 2026 season

Perhaps no position in football demands more power, explosiveness and physicality than the defensive line.

Tasked with disrupting the run game, collapsing the pocket and making life miserable for opposing quarterbacks, defensive linemen can dictate the way an entire offense operates. Whether it’s an interior presence capable of clogging running lanes or an edge rusher who can consistently get after the quarterback, having an elite defensive line can be the difference between an average defense and a dominant one.

Here's a look at the top 15 defensive linemen in the country heading into the 2026 high school football season.

1. Jalen Brewster

High School: Cedar Hill (TX)

Class: 2027

College Commitment: Texas Tech

Breakdown: One of the most physically imposing defensive linemen in the country, Brewster is a five-star interior force who has been ranked No. 1 at his position in the 2027 class. He has been committed to Texas Tech since October, but the Red Raiders have had to fend off continued pushes from Ohio State, Oregon, Indiana and others for the 6-foot-3, 300-pounder.

2. DJ Jacobs

Blessed Trinity Catholic defensive lineman David

High School: Blessed Trinity Catholic (Roswell, GA)

Class: 2027

College Commitment: Ohio State

Breakdown: Jacobs is coming off a junior season in which he piled up 102 tackles, 24 tackles for loss and 16 sacks, showing why he has been regarded as one of the best pass rushers in the country. The five-star edge chose Ohio State over a long list of national powers, giving the Buckeyes a potential cornerstone for their defensive front and another elite piece in their 2027 class.

3. Jaiden Bryant

High School: Irmo (Columbia, SC)

Class: 2027

College Commitment: Miami

Breakdown: Miami won a major recruiting battle for Bryant after the five-star edge flipped his commitment from LSU in June. At 6-foot-4 and 245 pounds, Bryant brings the power and explosiveness to line up all over the defensive front, and his fit in the Hurricanes' aggressive defense makes him one of the more intriguing pieces of their 2027 class.

4. Asher Ghioto

Bolles defensive end Asher Ghioto, is the Florida Times Union All-First Coast defensive player of the year in football. Asher Ghioto recorded 35 tackles for loss, 23 sacks and two takeaways (one fumble recovery, one interception) and is ranked as a top-10 national prospect for 2028. He is a sophomore. High School: The Bolles School (Jacksonville, FL)

Class: 2028

College Commitment: Uncommitted

Breakdown: Ghioto has been dominant early in his high school career, totaling 84 tackles, 35 tackles for loss and 23 sacks as a sophomore, and he enters his junior season as one of the premier recruits in the 2028 class. The five-star edge remains uncommitted despite more than 60 offers, with Miami, Florida, Texas A&M, Ohio State, Georgia and others battling for a prospect whose combination of size and production makes him a potential gamechanger at the next level.

5. Tyzon Swann

High School: Henry E. Lackey (Indian Head, MD)

Class: 2028

College Commitment: Uncommitted

Breakdown: There may not be a more productive young defensive lineman in the country than Swann, who recorded 135 tackles, 50 tackles for loss and 16 sacks as a sophomore. The five-star is ranked among the very best players in the 2028 class and has already visited a who's who of college football, including Alabama, USC, Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State, with Alabama emerging as one of the programs making the strongest push.

6. Wyatt Smith

High School: St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, FL)

Class: 2027

College Commitment: Ohio State

Breakdown: Smith put together one of the best defensive seasons in the country as a junior, finishing with 155 tackles and 13 sacks while helping the Raiders win their seventh consecutive state championship. The 6-foot-6 edge rusher is headed to Ohio State, where his length, athleticism and pass-rushing ability should make him an excellent fit for Larry Johnson's defensive line.

7. KJ Green

High School: Stephenson (Stone Mountain, GA)

Class: 2027

College Commitment: LSU

Breakdown: Few pass rushers in the 2027 class were more productive than Green, who recorded 18 sacks during his junior season. The five-star edge ultimately chose LSU over South Carolina, Georgia and Oregon, giving the Tigers an explosive addition who could help fill the void left when fellow five-star Jaiden Bryant flipped to Miami.

8. Anthony Sweeney

High School: St. Frances Academy (Baltimore, MD)

Class: 2027

College Commitment: Texas Tech

Breakdown: Texas Tech scored a massive recruiting win when Sweeney picked the Red Raiders over a who's who of college football, including Alabama, Georgia, LSU and Tennessee. The five-star edge is ranked among the top 20 players nationally and gives Joey McGuire another elite defensive piece alongside five-star Jalen Brewster, making Tech's defensive line one of the most intriguing young groups in the country. Sweeney transferred from Our Lady of Good Counsel to St. Frances in April.

9. Zyron Forstall

High School: IMG Academy (Bradenton, FL)

Class: 2027

College Commitment: Texas A&M

Breakdown: Forstall has the combination of size and explosiveness that makes him one of the most coveted edge rushers in the country. The five-star is committed to Texas A&M after choosing the Aggies over a loaded group of national programs, and at 6-foot-4 and 240 pounds, he gives Mike Elko and defensive line coach Elijah Robinson a versatile piece who can eventually line up all over the front.

10. James Pace II

High School: DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD)

Class: 2027

College Commitment: Auburn

Breakdown: Pace emerged as one of the top defensive prospects in Maryland during his recruitment, eventually choosing Auburn over Tennessee, Colorado and several other Power Four programs. The four-star edge is a top 70 national prospect whose athleticism and pass-rushing ability should fit well in an Auburn defense that continues to add blue-chip talent to its front.

11. Kameron McGee

High School: Brother Rice (Chicago, IL)

Class: 2028

College Commitment: Uncommitted

Breakdown: McGee has already made some history in Illinois, becoming the first player from the state to reach No. 1 overall in the 247Sports 2028 Top247. The five-star edge has offers from virtually every major program in the country and remains uncommitted, with Notre Dame, Miami, Florida, Michigan and others among the schools making a serious push for the 6-foot-4, 245-pounder.

12. Zane Rowe

High School: Denton Guyer (Denton, TX)

Class: 2027

College Commitment: Oregon

Breakdown: Oregon won the race for Rowe in March, giving the Ducks one of the top defensive linemen in the 2027 class. The four-star edge is ranked No. 5 at his position by ESPN and brings the versatility to play both sides of the ball, but his 6-foot-4, 265-pound frame and pass-rushing ability should make him a natural fit in Dan Lanning's defensive front.

13. Kellan Hall

Christian Academy defensive lineman Kellan Hall is one of the state's top football recruits in the Class of 2028.

High School: Christian Academy of Louisville (KY)

Class: 2028

College Commitment: Uncommitted

Breakdown: Hall's recruitment is already shaping up to be one of the biggest battles of the 2028 cycle. The five-star defensive lineman is ranked No. 1 at his position by multiple services and has offers from Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Tennessee and others, while Oklahoma has emerged as an early favorite. Hall's rare combination of size, athleticism and position versatility makes him the type of interior force any program would build a defensive front around.

14. Jalanie George

High School: Desert Edge (Goodyear, AZ)

Class: 2028

College Commitment: Uncommitted

Breakdown: One of the most coveted defensive players in the 2028 class, George recently trimmed his recruitment to six schools: Florida, Auburn, Miami, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Washington. The five-star edge already has the size of a college defensive end at 6-foot-5 and 245 pounds, and after recording 16 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks as a sophomore, he has the production to match the recruiting hype.

15. Krew Jones

High School: Orem (UT)

Class: 2027

College Commitment: Oklahoma

Breakdown: Jones is headed to Oklahoma after committing to the Sooners in November, and the move to Orem gives him a new stage for his final high school season. The four-star edge was dominant at Ridgeline (Millville, UT) last season, recording 80 tackles, 26 tackles for loss and 14.5 sacks, and his 6-foot-4 frame and relentless pass rush should make him an intriguing fit in Oklahoma's defensive front.
