Quarterback Thomas Castellanos joined the No. 12 Texas Tech Red Raiders through the transfer portal right before the start of the 2026-27 season after being cleared to play from an eligibility injunction. However, a new ruling that initially granted several players from the 2022 class eligibility threatens Castellanos, but it appears he won’t have much to worry about.
Even after the Kentucky Court of Appeals decided to dissolve the temporary injunction for the 2022 class, initial reports indicated that the redshirt senior appeared to be on track to remain eligible, according to Pete Nakos of On3 Sports. An attorney revealed that as long as Castellanos does not participate with any professional teams, he could maintain his status with Texas Tech.
“Sources tell On3 that Texas Tech is talking with compliance over Thomas Castellanos’ eligibility,” Nakos reported. “Attorney Ryan Downton tells On3: ‘As long as he did not have any professionalism issues, they should certify him as eligible under the NCAA Manual as it exists today.'”

While that may be true, he will not be playing in the Week 5 matchup against the Colorado Buffaloes, according to Pete Thamel of ESPN. It’s said that Castellanos and Texas Tech University will evaluate his status moving forward after Saturday’s matchup.
“NEWS: Texas Tech backup quarterback Thomas Castellanos will not play tomorrow at Colorado, per a Texas Tech spokesman,” Thamel reported. “He’d been playing on a temporary restraining order in Kentucky that was overruled today. Castellanos and the school are evaluating options for the rest of the season after tomorrow.”
Castellanos has appeared in four games for the Red Raiders so far this season. He’s been used sporadically in a quarterback/flex type of role so far. Through four appearances, the 23-year-old has recorded 35 passing yards, 44 rushing yards, and three total touchdowns (one passing, two rushing) while completing 50.0% of his pass attempts. His future with the program is seemingly up in the air.
