The College Football Playoff Has Unveiled A New Logo System

For over a decade the College Football Playoff logo has been the long, tall gold and platinum trophy awarded to the national champions. But as the tournament heads into its 13th season, it will have a new brand identity and logo system.

On Tuesday, the College Football Playoff unveiled a new logo system. Though not a massive departure from the old one, the new one has a different shade of gold and slightly more rounded corners of the two sides.

In a statement, CFP executive director Rich Clark said that the new logo "builds on the successes of our first 12 years and positions the brand for continued growth moving forward."

“Since its inception, the CFP has represented the pinnacle of college football, capturing the excellence, pageantry and unwavering fan passion that make our sport so unique,” Clark said. “Our refreshed logo system builds on the successes of our first 12 years and positions the brand for continued growth moving forward.”

Here are the changes as outlined by the College Football Playoff's website:

  • A shimmering, metallic gold gradient – "Championship Gold" – has been applied to the iconic CFP football, enhancing its prestige and visual impact.
  • The logo's bracket strokes have been thickened, its ends have been rounded and the inset has been narrowed to better reflect the CFP National Championship trophy. These details add a more modern look to the mark.
  • The corners of the football's laces have been slightly rounded to further replicate the curvilinear nature of the overall mark.
  • The three-letter acronym "CFP" becomes a primary reference and is now integrated into the primary logo system, joining the iconic CFP football in a bold, unified visual identity.
  • The typeface 'Video' becomes the CFP's primary font. This new direction creates a distinct, uniquely ownable visual system designed to engage and excite fans in new ways.
  • To deepen the connection between the six bowl games and the CFP, a series of bowl game lock-ups was developed. These visualizations reinforce the bowls' essential role in the journey that crowns the true national champion.

Change?

While the CFP might have thought they made some bold changes to their design, college football fans mocked them for essentially making no meaningful changes. Some joked that the organization likely got scammed by whichever consulting firm designed these changes.

"Some group of 24 year olds charged them $6 million dollars to make the font bold. Good for them," one user joked.

"Gotta respect the consulting firm who just robbed you of 250k," wrote another.

"This is like when the Browns changed the shade of orange on their helmets. Had it not been announced, no one would’ve noticed," a third wrote.

But if the powers that be are satisfied with what they have, it's their money to spend how they wish.
