Flag football’s next frontier is college competition – and the University of Nebraska is ready to lead the charge.

The Cornhuskers, spearheaded by former Ottawa University flag coach Liz Sowers, are the first (and so far only) Power 4 school to announce a flag football program, and, as such, have wasted no time snapping up some of the nation’s top high school flag football players.

The Cornhuskers won’t be starting play until 2028, in line with the NCAA’s recent recommendation that flag become a national collegiate championship sport by 2028, but that’s not stopping them from building up a roster and preparing for the starting line. The offers and commitments surrounding the Cornhuskers have been one of the most talked-about topics in the flag football world this spring, as all eyes turn towards the trailblazing program.
