THE ROAR: LSU gets away from Louisiana Tech after bad first half

The LSU Tigers looked to continue their momentum as they welcomed Louisiana Tech to Death Valley. After a terrible first half that included four turnovers, LSU woke up in the second half and scored 28 unanswered points as they took down the Bulldogs 45-14.

HOW WE GOT HERE:

The contest started with a pair of three-and-outs from each team before LSU got going on offense with an 11-play, 52-yard drive that ended with a 29-yard field goal from Scott Strorcyzk to make it 3-0. Two minutes later, Sam Leavitt found the end zone for the first time tonight as he ran in from five yards out to cap the 44-yard drive and extend the lead to 10-0 for the Bayou Bengals.

But then, things started to fall apart.

The next four drives for LSU went fumble, interception, interception returned for 94 yards, and a Louisiana Tech touchdown by Jordan McRae to make it a 10-7 lead before Leavitt threw his third pick of the first half on the ensuing drive.

At the half, LSU had committed four turnovers to the Bulldogs, keeping the newest member of the Sun Belt Conference very much in the contest.

On the first possession of the second half for LSU, Storcyzk extended the LSU advantage once again to 13-7 on a 25-yard field goal.

After another good stop by the Tigers’ defense, the LSU offense looked like a bit of itself as they went on a 60-yard scoring drive that took just six plays before Leavitt got his fourth rushing touchdown of the young season with a 9-yard scamper before a beautiful two-point conversion to make it 21-7 with 4:32 left in the third.

LSU kept their foot on the gas in the third quarter and into the fourth as Starcyzk got his third field goal of the night to make it 24-7 before a killer five-play, 73-yard drive including a 53-yard shot to Tre Wilson that set up Leavitt’s third rushing touchdown of the contest as the score now sat at 31-7 with 12:47 left in the game.

After a Deuce Geralds’ strip-and-fumble to continue his monster night, Leavitt once again led the Tigers’ offense down the field and found TreyDez Green in the end zone on third and goal to cushion the advantage at 38-7.

Louisiana Tech gashed the LSU secondary on the next possession as Joshua Mickens got through for a 67-yard touchdown strike from Blake Baker to make it a little bit more respectable at 38-14.

Landen Clark came in for half of the fourth quarter to lead the Tigers offense, and right after the two-minute timeout, he ran it in from seven yards out to put the game on ice with a 45-14 score.

The freshman was electric with 4 tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble, to be a leader on the LSU defense tonight.
