‘This Guy Might Not Be Built for Michigan’ — New HC Kyle Whittingham Draws Ire for Downplaying Ohio State Rivalry

Kyle Whittingham is set to lead Michigan into one of the biggest games of his coaching career in November when the Wolverines face arch-rival Ohio State.

However, his recent remarks about the historic Michigan-Ohio State rivalry have not gone over well with many Wolverines fans.

Kyle Whittingham’s Take on Ohio State-Michigan Rivalry Sparks Heated Reaction

Whittingham sparked a heated conversation during Big Ten Media Days in Chicago after downplaying the role of hatred in the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry.

He said he hopes the game with the Buckeyes carries major championship implications, while adding that a rivalry can remain “intense and emotional” without necessarily being driven by hatred.

Those initial comments did not sit well with many Michigan supporters, as the rivalry is regarded as one of the most heated in college football.

With Whittingham’s comments about “The Game” continuing to generate discussion in recent weeks, he revisited the subject on Monday and made it clear that his competitive mindset toward Ohio State has not changed.

“Do we have a better chance of winning if I hated them? I don’t understand,” Whittingham said on Monday. “Whatever gives us the best chance to win, I’m all for it. I want to beat them worse than anybody.”

Michigan fans once again took the opportunity to criticize Whittingham over his stance.

“This guy might not be built for Michigan tbh,” Random SEC page posted.

“He’s just not getting it. Someone needs to pull him to the side and remind him what this Rivalry means,” a fan said.

“I fear he doesn’t understand it. Maybe he can get there,” one said.

The Michigan-Ohio State rivalry reached one of its most controversial points in recent memory during the 2024 season. Former Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore led the Wolverines into Columbus as underdogs, and Michigan stunned the Buckeyes 13-10. The game was followed by an ugly confrontation after Michigan players planted the school flag at midfield on the Ohio State logo, resulting in police using mace to break up the chaos.

Ohio State ultimately had the final say that season by winning the national championship. The Buckeyes also carried that momentum into the 2025 season, defeating Michigan 27-9 at Michigan Stadium and ending a four-game losing streak in the rivalry.

With Ohio State now aiming at consecutive victories against Michigan, the Wolverines will look to regain control of the series. That is why many expected Whittingham to bring some added fire to his comments about the Buckeyes ahead of the 2026 matchup. Instead, his diplomatic approach has left some Michigan fans frustrated.

“This dude is over his head. Thinks he’s playing tiddly winks with the Mormons still,” one said.

“Yeah he better beat ohio state. These comments will be used horribly,” a fan wrote.

“Who found this fool?” a person said.

Whittingham’s desire to keep hatred and unnecessary vitriol out of the rivalry does not mean he lacks motivation to defeat Ohio State. However, the strong reaction from Michigan fans prove his comments have created additional pressure heading into the matchup.

At this point, Whittingham may simply need to let his performance against the Buckeyes do the talking. A win over Ohio State could quickly silence questions about his comments, while a loss could give Michigan fans plenty of ammunition to revisit his stance on the rivalry.

Along with Whittingham, Michigan QB Bryce Underwood will also be under the microscope as he enters his second year with the program.

In 2025, the Michigan offense posted a PFN CFB Offense Impact Score of 82.1, which ranked 28th in the nation.
