Thursday Dawg Bites

The SEC slate continues with the perennial conference GPA booster Vanderbilt visiting the Classic City for the first time since 2022. The once-annual automatic conference victory has since been demoted, much to the chagrin of the Georgia program.

While some may see this mostly as a revenge game against Vanderbilt QB Jared Curtis for flipping to his hometown Commodores over our beloved Dawgs, I see this more as an opportunity for the defense to continue to shine. We are depressingly already a third of the way through the regular season, and the Dawgs are yet to face a competent offense.

Oklahoma was supposed to be the first real test, but John Mateer’s insistence on giving the defense the ball said otherwise. We know the talent, production, and coaching are all there, but it’s hard to fully gauge the defense until we play an offense with a pulse.

Though Vanderbilt did produce a Heisman finalist just last season, that player won’t be on the field this weekend (or any field, for that matter). Jared Curtis is a talented slinger, but he has one road start under his belt, and that didn’t go so well. Handling the Sanford Stadium crowd, as well as Chris Cole, KJ Bolden, and a slew of former 5-star athletes will certainly be his biggest challenge yet.

Kirby Smart and the defensive coaching staff will likely try to confuse the young QB, forcing him into some early mistakes. If they can rattle his confidence and have him second-guessing, the sharks will start to smell blood.

Though the offense hasn’t really needed to do much of anything this season due to the defense’s dominance, Gunner Stockton and Co. have quietly become a more explosive version of the hyper-efficient offense we saw last season. Talyn Taylor is quickly becoming the go-to guy on the outside, while Nate Frazier and Chauncey Bowens continue to churn out big runs. The offense has several ways to attack a defense, and sometimes the uncreative mindset of “get a playmaker the ball in space and see what happens” works out.

Every coach loves to preach the idea of “Complementary Football” and we have seen a textbook definition of that thus far. The defense is getting off to good starts, something that was a concern the last two seasons, which allows the offense to settle in and play the game they want.

The offense has been efficient and productive, creating leads and keeping the defense fresh.

Coach Smart loves to get an early lead and slowly bludgeon opponents to death with a physical and punishing run game. While this tactic may, at times, be boring for fans who want to see offensive fireworks throughout the game, this mindset should help keep players fresh in a nine-conference-game season.

With Florida looking like they might actually be a functioning program once again, the remaining schedule now features three potential games against top-10 opponents away from Sanford Stadium, starting next week with Alabama.

This week’s game against a freshman QB and an undersized defense seems like the perfect opportunity for the punishing lead-sitting tactic we’ve all grown to love to hate.
