Notre Dame football quarterback CJ Carr is sparking pre-NFL hype. Now longtime NFL Draft expert and former ESPN personality Todd McShay is a believer. Even placing him on a “legendary” path ahead of the 2026 season.

McShay didn’t hesitate to hand the right-handed quarterback the stirring title Thursday.

“He’s the best quarterback Notre Dame has had during our lifetime,” McShay said on his podcast. “I think he has a chance to be absolutely sensational. I think CJ Carr is tracking toward being a legendary Notre Dame quarterback.”

Bold words for a program that just recently produced Riley Leonard as an NFL prospect. But Carr earns two big chances this fall in South Bend.

One involves ending the Fighting Irish’s skid of producing a Heisman Trophy winner, as Tim Brown represents the last one from 1987. Yet Notre Dame’s streak of delivering a Heisman winner at quarterback is even longer. John Huarte won the prestigious individual hardware back in 1964.

But the second involves something more prestigious: Winning the national title. Notre Dame has knocked on the door under coach Marcus Freeman and former coach Brian Kelly. But the proud program hasn’t won the crown since 1988.

The dual-threat Carr is garnering first round draft hype ahead of the upcoming 2026 season.

“He has an easy throwing motion that generates beautiful spirals. When he’s on schedule, his eyes match his feet and he plays the game with a quiet lower half,” ESPN NFL analyst Jordan Reid wrote back on June 9.

Now McShay believes he’s seeing something legendary out of the Fighting Irish QB.
