It was a chaotic night for the LSU Tigers on Saturday as they suffered a narrow 35-34 loss to the Kentucky Wildcats in Week 6. Head coach Will Stein and quarterback Kenneth Minchey pulled off an incredible upset win in an overtime thriller, capitalizing on a sloppy LSU defense that struggled throughout the night.
Following the loss, fans and analysts raised concerns about LSU’s playoff aspirations and chances of reaching the national championship game.
Despite a loaded roster featuring elite talent from across the country, the Tigers have struggled to live up to expectations.
However, former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer believes Lane Kiffin and Co. still have a shot.
Urban Meyer Makes Opinion Clear on LSU’s Playoff Aspirations
The SEC schedule has once again proved challenging for the Tigers. Kiffin and his team suffered a similar blow in Week 3, losing 32-24 to the Ole Miss Rebels on the road.
The loss to Kentucky, meanwhile, exposed several issues on both sides of the ball, with LSU struggling to finish drives when it mattered most.
“I still think they have a shot. I think you’re going to see a couple, two to three teams in that 12-team playoff with three losses,” Urban Meyer said on the latest episode of “The Triple Option” podcast.
Meyer pointed out that LSU’s remaining matchups against SEC heavyweights could make or break its season. The Tigers still have games against the Alabama Crimson Tide, Texas Longhorns, Tennessee Volunteers, and Mississippi State Bulldogs in the coming weeks.
Mark Ingram II, however, believes LSU’s season is already in trouble. The loss to Kentucky has exposed the team’s weaknesses, and winning its remaining SEC matchups will be a tough task.

“I’m sorry to all my, you know, Bayou Bengals, but I think y’all are cooked at the moment,” he said on the same episode.
Two-loss teams have previously qualified for the expanded College Football Playoff, but a three-loss team has yet to earn a berth. Meyer believes the increased parity across college football could change that in 2026.
The Tigers currently rank #17 in PFN’s latest CFB Power Rankings. PFN’s Playoff Meter gives LSU a 10.9% chance of making the 12-team field.
